My First Competition

Jan-26-2008 Posted under Kelly Talk, Olympic Weightlifting

So I just got back from my first competition.  It was in Port Alberni-a 2 hr ferry ride and 2hr drive from Vancouver.

Somehow I ended up weighing in at 58.9 (the aim was to get down to about 60 so assuming all went well I could go down to 58kgs for Western Canadians end of March, but somehow I lost an extra kg in the 48hrs before-I even had dinner the night before.

It was snowing outside and freezing cold in the gym.  The plan was to snatch 53 first attempt, 57 second attempt, 60 third attempt.  Warm-up went well, but when I went onto the platform for my first attempt I guess I had a tad too much adrenaline running through me and I expected the bar to be a lot heavier than it was and ended up doing this huge pull and next thing I knew the bar was over my head with no chance of the arms stopping it.  It seriously felt like the bar was weightless and took me by surprise.  So for my Second attempt he moved it up to 55kgs, but I completely overcompensated for my first attempt and ended up shorting it, but then I re-did 55kgs for my third attempt and ended up doing a perfectly solid snatch.  So not the 60kgs I was hopping for but relieved to get a solid snatch in after missing the first two.

Have been having problems locking out my split jerks, so really had no clue how they’d go.  First attempt was 65kgs and it was solid, second attempt was 70kgs and it was solid, and the third attempt was 75kg and probably the nicest clean and jerk I have ever done-felt like I could have added at least 5 more kgs.  So despite weighing in at 58.9, I ended up winning the 63kg weight class and earned a spot to go to Western Canadians end of March and I just need to lift 2kgs more at Western Canadians to earn a spot at Canadian Nationals end of May.

So all and all I was really happy and somewhat relieved to get the first competition over with (after I realized I have never competed in an individual sport before-always just done team sports).  I loved the feeling of being on the platform in front of an audience and can’t wait until I can do it again!

-Videos of my lists will be posted soon!
