Kefir-The New Yogurt?
Feb-27-2008 Posted under Kelly Talk, Nutrition
Kefir is a cultured milk product, like yogurt, but it’s more of a drink. It contains strains of gut friendly bacteria not found in yogurt. It also has beneficial yeasts which protect the gut.
It’s very easy to digest and is great for babies and people who are lactose intolerant.
Like yogurt it’s high in calcium, but also in phosphorus and Vitamin B12.
Many find Kefir too sour on its own and add honey or fruit. For this reason it’s perfect in smoothies.
I may even build up the courage to try it sometime this week!
Anyone know where you can buy Kefir in Vancouver? I looked for it at wholefoods but couldnt find it.
I found it at “Choices Food Market”. Kinda pricey, though. Four flavors and plain to choose from.
Thanks Lee, I’ll check it out. Have you tried it?
I’ve see in in the “natural foods” dairy section at Save On Foods. But this might vary from store to store. Look for the green shelves.
Some of the small Indian supermarkets (Fruiticana near me) have some small farm local dairy products like fresh yogurt (Nanak’s, $2/tub - fresh and cheap!). I haven’t looked for kefir before but if I am by there I will pop in and let you know.
Im not sure about this Kefir thing. I picked some up from choices today and well its too runny to be yogurt and too thick to be milk and tastes kind of weird. I’m going to try and freeze it with some protein powder in it and see if it will turn icecream like… (wishful thinking I know!)
