My First Olifting Clinic

Jul-27-2008 Posted under Kelly Talk

So… this saturday I hosted my first olifting clinic. We foused on the clean and jerk and did a series of drills breaking down the movments and then put it all together at the end. There are some minor things I will do differently next time around but all and all it went pretty well and improvment was seen in everyone who attended.

In my request for feedback from the participants, this is the response I got so far:

“Hi Kelly,

I thought the timing was excellent. The deconstruction of the movement and how it progressed from beginning to end really helped me make sense of it all. I really benefited from the emphasis you placed on practicing movements that generate power and quickness. Also, the tips on how to work with flexibility limitations were great. In return, I understood the points of failure better -alignment, bar too far in front, inefficient breathing, etc.

Now I know pelvic tilts were just one of many problems with my technique! It was also beneficial having Amy come around to check form and remind you of critical things like head positioning, shoulders over the bar etc. The 4 hours were just right for the clinic. I think we had plenty of time at the end to put it all together. It’s amazing how taxing the movements are mentally and physically.
Adding some insight on drills or techniques to incorporate into a weekly workout schedule would be great in the future.

Thanks again!”

  1. Jordan Said,

    Hey Kel!

Thanks sooo much for having me, it was great.

I actually think the pace was pretty much perfect. You did a very good job of letting us “get to work” while interspersing with instruction.

Additionally, this worked very well due to the incredibly demanding (neurologically and physically) aspects of the lifts.

Everything made perfect sense, and I feel I really ironed out some kinks (or at least know how to now with practice!).

The ONE thing I was hoping for, which may not be possible, would have been to go heavy doing cleans, then go heavy doing jerks, then all together at the end.

The reason why, is I was hoping to improve my jerk (and clean too I guess) on its own. I failed 235 CJ, but imagine I may have been able to jerk it off a rack.

HOWEVER, I have learned the tools to try next time, so I guess it doesn’t really matter! Also going for max clean, jerk, and then CJ may not have worked.

So actually I guess it was perfect!

Your instruction was phenomenal; as if you had slides in front of you. Never did I notice a stutter or “derailing” of your train of thought.

Thanks again for the great day!

  2. Ray Said,

I thought the clinic was great it taught me a lot I think my clean and jerks have improved, can’t wait for the next one. I think you gave enough breaks for people to refuel, you explained the movement really good. No complaint,s maybe a hand out that explains the movement, still it wasn’t really needed. All and all you did a great job.

  3. Tina Said,

    Hey Kel,

I think you did a great job. It was good to break things down. I really
felt that I learned a lot from you. I know I still need a lot of practice
but the few times I actually got it right will stick with me. I may not be
able to get the technique every time but at least now I know what it feels
like and I think I will better at realizing what I am doing wrong. I am
looking to forward to working on the snatch.

    Kelly,

I thought the class went very well. I don’t think it went too slow as
there were several people who haven’t had as much exposure to the clean
and jerks as I have. I thought it was very well organized, with lots of
time to practice the specific movements before we put it all together.
The only suggestion I could make is to have each person go through a
movement in front of the entire class. This way we can see some of the
mistakes we are making. All and all I thought you and Amy did a
fantastic job, you broke down every movement in a complicated lift and
built us up from simple movements to complete movements.

    Great Job!

    Matt

  5. Paul Richardson Said,

Sounds like a good time by all, I look forward to the September one…although that’ll be after I’ve had about 6 weeks off from Crossfit/lifting….so it should be interesting ;)

  6. Kim Said,

Kelly, are there any pics floating around from the clinic?

  8. Nathan Said,

All of us thought it was excellent. It was clearly laid out, perfectly timed in order of sequence of techniques, and just great knowledge. It was a surprise to us when you said it was your first clinic. The way you taught was as if you’d given that course a lot of times, because it didn’t seem you missed anything or were sitting there thinking “what next”. Everything was smooth and well put together. So thanks. My brother joked that maybe a complimentary chili lunch in the middle of it might have been a nice touch, but that would complicate things a bit huh.
