New O-lifting Gym

Sep-2-2008 Posted under Kelly Talk

So… today was the first day training at the new gym in Surrey.

They promised Dan it would be ready for today, but when we showed up, it was still a work in progress.

Dan wasn’t impressed, but then one of the east Indian dads got on the phone and next thing you knew there were 4 of them there finishing off a platform for me to train on and another one going to pick up the plates and bars. But then when the plates and bars arrived there was no girl o-lifting bar, something they had promised Dan as Dan said he would not come over if I could not be accommodated. Dan said straight up that we were going back to SFU and the guys response was we will have a girl bar here by tomorrow and Dan said it wasn’t possible, no where in BC sells Girl O-lifting bars, next thing you know the three east Indian dads get on their cell phones, make a couple calls in Indian and then tap Dan on the shoulder and say a girl bar will be here in half an hour, and sure enough half an hour later a girl bar arrives. After doing my program I typically do weighted back extensions so Dan asked if there was a GHSP machine and the guys said no, but he could have one there by tomorrow (and after the bar incident, I actually think there will be one there tomorrow) Life is so much easier when you have money and connections?

The place is going to be pretty cool though. 5 platforms and nobody except us in there. All new bars and plates and they are not charging me anything. There is an east Indian powerlifting club who will use the space before we get there, but from 7pm on its all ours which brings me to the next funny part of the story. The powerlifting club is run by these old east Indian guys and they didn’t want to let me train. First off I was a girl, and second I wasn’t wearing enough clothes (It was hot and I was wearing a pair of shorts that ended mid thigh and a tank top that cut in at the back) and would be a bad influence and distraction to his boys ?. The east Indian dads got in this discussion with the guy and then he reluctantly agreed. I found it rather amusing that they live in Surrey and are afraid of me being a bad influence.

Its pretty cool though how Dan has made it clear that Im his priority and that he’s not interested in doing anything that hampers my ability to train.

-Starting at 7pm is going to suck though, because it means I wont get home until atleast 9:30 and if I’m coaching Crossfit at 6am it means that I am up for 14 hours before I start training and getting 7hrs sleep a night max…
