Steroid Testing at Crossfit Games-Any Thoughts?
Jun-21-2009 Posted under Kelly Talk
So earlier this week they announced that there will be steroid testing at this years crossfit games. A lot of discussion about it over on Crossfit.coms message boards http://games2009.crossfit.com/thegames/games-09-steroid-testing.html#comments
Interesting article about drugs and sports here: http://www.gladwell.com/2001/2001_08_10_a_drug.htm
Any thoughts?
I think drug testing sends the wrong message about the spirit of the games.
If i were to lose to a steroid induced champion, I should accept it with grace, congratulate them and thank them for motivating me to try harder. It really none of my business what everyone else is doing.
Promoting good sportsmanship is more important than a title.
People who cheat know deep down, and the pride from such a win is cheapened and becomes an issue of external recognition than a test of ones personal best.
When I set the marsupial swing record of 9 lengths up from the previous 3 1/2 lengths, you were promptly motivated to beat it with 9 and a half.
Having people raise the bar motivates others regardless.
It is really a double edged sword to me. On one hand you could argue testing keeps things fair but on the other if people know they will be tested they can just use steroids with shorter esters/active lives and be testing clean by the time the games roll around anyway. Not to mention due to genetic variance nothing physical is truly ever “fair”. Where is the line to be drawn anyway? several OTC supplements give what could be called an advantage as can money to receive better education on training and nutrition than others. Steroids may help but they are nothing without proper training and nutrition not to mention proper understanding of what compounds to run and how, from a reliable steroid source at that.
