HOW MUCH FISH OIL?

A few weeks ago, I started a series on toxic fat that reviews the information in Barry Sears Latest book, while here is a continuation with the role fish oil can play:

High-dose fish oil can be used to reduce endocannabinoids (the hormones in the brain that cause hunger) and reduce the silent inflammation in fat cells.

How much do you need?

  • No chronic disease-2.5grams EPA and DHA per day
  • Overweight, obese, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, before starting weight loss program-5 grams EPA and DHA per day
  • Chronic Pain-7.5 grams EPA and DHA per day
  • Neurological disorders-10grams EPA&DHA per day

The easiest way to tell whether your fish oil is reasonably free from these contaminants is through smell and taste.  A very fishy taste or smell of fish oil is highly indicative of oil that has not been sufficiently reined.  Much of that taste and smell comes from the presence of breakdown products of the fatty acids known as alderhydes.  These are chemicals that are known to cause damage to DNA.  If you want more quantification, then go to www.ifosporgram.com which is a free site run by the university of Guelph in Ontario.  The IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) program uses the most sophisticated instrumentation to determine the purity of fish oils.  Look for those oils with a five-star rating, indicating they are pure, potent and ready for action.

If you are planning to use liquid fish oil, always keep it in the freezer to prevent oxidation and to improve the taste.  If is really good stuff, it wont freeze.  Of course, if does become solid in the freezer, that’s a good indication that it may have lots of impurities that have not been removed.

Sears recommendations for EPA and DHA require taking a lot of fish oil.  And here’s t he problem with natural products:  they can work very effectively, but you have to take a lot to see a therapeutic benefit.  If you take a small dose, then you get little, if any, positive effects.  The second thing you should notice is my recommendations are based on the grams of EPA and DHA, not the amount of fishoil itself.  People often don’t realize that most of the fatty acids in a typical fish oil supplement are not EPA and DHA.  If fact, in most fish oil products, the levels of EPA and DHA constitute only a small proportion of the total fat content.

    Hi Kelly,

Just wondering what your thoughts on Krill Oil are?

I have replaced my fish oil intake with this supplement.

  • Raph Dozzi

    Dear Kelly:

What Fish Oil do you go with? I live in the bay area in California and have been following your blog. Is there a particular brand that you buy locally at some generic store or what?

    Thanks :o )

  • http://www.kellyfrankson.com Kelly

John-krill oil is good for people who cant stand the fishy taste of fishoil, but using it, you really are eating the base of the food web of the ocean…

Raph, I use nordic naturals. In general as long as its pharmaceutical grade with 100%fat (ie no contaminants), then its just a matter of personal preference.

Just read another interesting benefit of fishoil: a dose of omega-3s post-workout enhances the body’s ability to convert food protein to muscle protein. It’s a good time to pop that fish oil pill!

    I am using Ascenta Nutra-Sea balanced epa/dha.

Should I be using a product that has and enhanced epa/dha balance?

are we looking for the epa/dha/ more than we are looking for the omega 3 contained in the product?

does nordic naturals have an enhanced epa/dha product?

does taking the oil in capsule form create a counterproductive situation with the gelatin in the capsules?

am i correct in thinking that if you recommend, for example, 5 grams of epa/dha a day that this is equivalent to, depending on the product, between 6 and 10 teaspoons a day and if that is correct, isn’t that reaaly, really expensive given that Nordic is approximately $40 for a small bottle (at Whole Foods this morning)

finally, a few weeks ago I thought you said something about publishing a link to a rating system for supplements. where can it be found?

    thank you very much,

    mark

  • http://www.kellyfrankson.com Kelly

Mark, the rating system is linked in the article above http://www.ifosporgram.com

    Nutra-Sea is fine.

As for the dossage, yes Im recommending about 2 tbsp a day (6 tsp), as for the price, dont go to whole foods. SNDcanada.com has nordic naturals on for $20 a bottle.

As for the Epa/DHA, yes it is correct that these are the numbers we care about, not the “omega 3″, but I wouldnt worry too much about the balance of EPA and DHA, they each have their purpose and nobody can agree on the desired ratio between them. The new macronutrient guide which will be released in November has a substantially expanded section on fish oil including this: • If inflammation is your major concern, find a fish oil with 6 EPA for every DHA. If concentration is your major concern, find a fish oil with equal amounts of EPA and DHA . But thats really getting down to the fine tweaking. Both do your body good, just get it in you however you can!

And as for capsule form, no it is not counterproductive, but taking capusles in those dosages tends to be a lot of pill popping. Amy did the oil while overdoasing and then switched back to capsules during her maintenance phase.
