More about the “Optimum Performance” in Crossfit Optimum Performance

Nov-27-2009 Posted under Kelly Talk

I promise, there is a whole slew of nutrition related articles set to go up shortly, but just wanted to answer the mass emails I have been getting about the new box opening in town and in particular what does the “Optimum Performance” component of Crossfit Optimum Performance mean?

Optimum Performance comes from the philosophies of James Fitzgerald (AKA OPT, crossfit games winner and fitness genius http://www.optimumperformancetraining.blogspot.com/).

Rather than randomly throwing together workouts, there is a scientific method behind the madness with a significant amount of effort going into ensuring the programming covers all the domains in the most effective means possible. A longterm approach is taken to ensure that you are hitting each energy system without contradicting the results you gained from the previous workout. %of bodyweight and % of maxes is used more often than set weights to ensure that the goal of the workout is achieved by everyone who completes it. There is also an emphasis on injury prevention with post workout cool downs being incorporated.

Its going to be GREAT!  With combined mentors of James Fitzgerald (Programming genius), Robb Wolf (Nutrition Genius) and Greg Everett (O-Lifting Genius)  we have an amazing sounding board to bounce ideas off.  Popeyes setting the place up right!

Give me a call or send me an email if you have any specific questions.

Crossfit Head Quarters Fires Robb Wolf ?!?!

Nov-24-2009 Posted under Kelly Talk

Robb has a rather “entertaining” post up on his blog right now with a review of the black box summit (which by all accounts was an exceptional weekend well worth the money) and the behavior of certain HQ staff (professional is not the first thing that comes to mind).  I would encourage you to read the entire post .

but it will be a HUGE loss to the crossfit community to loose one of the most knowledgeable and successful members.  I would bet money that through his blog, seminars and Norcal strength and conditioning, Robb has changed more lives than all staff of crossfit headquarters put together.

But it may actually be a blessing in disguise as it will free up time to finlly finish that book that will have a much broader reach than the seminars ever could.

I myself woud like to see the members of the Black Box Summit create their own affiliation system as they are the cream of the crop that we should all be aspiring to be.

Thyroid Protocol

Nov-21-2009 Posted under Kelly Talk

I’ve finally finished the Thyroid Protocol.  A full guide will be available on http://www.fit4younutrition.com/store.html

Here’s part I: How the thyroid works

When the thyroid is functioning correctly, the hypothalamus (in the brain) regulates how much T3 is circulating in the body. If it senses that the levels are low, it releases TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone) to tell the pituitary gland (also in the brain) to release TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). This stimulates the thyroid gland to produce T4, by combining iodine and tyrosine (an amino acid found in the body).

Once T4 is in the blood, it is converted into T3 within the peripheral tissues – mainly the liver and kidneys – using cortisol (a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands). The T3 enters the body’s cells, connects to the right receptors, and the energy is released.  If it is not converted to T3, energy is not released (aka metabolism cannot occur) and fat stores are not released.

How Important are Amino Acids?

How important are amino acids? Well they can:

  • increase lean muscle and energy output
  • accelerate muscle repair for fast recuperation from exercise
  • stimulate the production of growth hormone
  • reduce body fat
  • enhance oxygen and fatty acid utilization
  • increase mental concentration
  • stabilize blood sugar
  • accelerate ammonia removal to delay onset of fatigue
  • produce antibodies, enzymes and hormones
  • increase hair and nail strength, and
  • improve tissue and cartilage elastisty and regeneration.

For more information on amino acid check out Fit4YouNutrition.com Article 26  http://www.fit4younutrition.com/article26.html

Crossfit is great.  Nothing quite like it for an around fitness regime.  CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program that is designed to elicit as broad an adaptational physical response as possible. CrossFit is not a specialized fitness program but rather it focuses on competency in each of the ten recognized fitness domains; cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. Our athletes are trained to successfully perform multiple, diverse and randomized physical challenges that allow them to excel in everyday pursuits.

For those of you who have done crossfit at other boxes, you will find that the programming at crossfit Optimum Performance will be different.  There is a sceintific method behind the madness with a significant amount of effort going into ensuring the programming covers all the domains in the most effective means possible.  For examples of the type of workouts and movements that are performed check out:  http://www.optimumperformancetraining.blogspot.com/

Our new box is opening up December 1st (550 w 6th avenue).  Its a great location right across from the new cambie sky train station with a ton of new equipment and SHOWERS!

Typically how it works is you need 10-15 personal training sessions before you can start the group classes.  However, we are launching an introductory offer where we will be holding an “On-ramp Class” that will go through the personal training curriculum in a small group environment at a discounted rate.  The onramp classes will run  Monday, Wednesdy, Thursday at 7am and 8pm.

Any questions, let me know.  And if you have any other friends who may be interested, feel free to forward this to them as well.
