Avoiding Temptation-Advice from Kelly Starett and Robb Wolf

Kelly Starrett has a saying: “Best self-defense: Don’t be there.”

Robb says this is particularly true when we are talking about food. You see, you have no self-control when it comes to food. Some may do better that others, but the reality is our ancestors never aced the types of foods we pack into our pantries. The sugar, the refined carbs. They are completely new and they are addictive.

For more of Robbs advice, pick up The Paleo Solution. Great book, easy to read and valuable for people of all backgrounds. EVERYONE should get it!

Robb Wolf on Lack of Sleep

If the notion of cancer caused by lack of sleep is not motivational to you, I’ll go for a more superficial shot-How about looking good naked. Interested yet? If you do not sleep you will:
1. Completely cock-block your fat loss.
2. Get fat, sick, and diabetic
3. Get old and wrinkled before your time.

If we are chronically insulin resistant and have elevated blood glucose levels from cortisol, it is quite similar to eating a high-carb diet. Advanced glycation end-products age our skin and organs at an accelerated rate. Insulin resistance causes us to store fat around the waistline and we tend to not use body fat for energy. Additionally, elevated cortisol destabilizes the protein collagen, which is what gives youthful skin its, well, youthfulness! Pg 129 The Paleo Solution

Robb Wolf Exert #4-what grains do…

Here is a Recap from Robb Wolfs book: The Paleo Solution on how grains cause malabsorption issues and how that affects our health and well-being:

1. Damage to the gut lining. If the gut is damaged, you do not absorb nutrients. We need healthy villi and micorvilli to absorb our nutrients, be they protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins or minerals.

2. Damage to the gall bladder and bile production. If you do not absorb fats and at soluble nutrients such as vitamin A, D, K, and other nutrients you will have problems utilizing any minerals you do absorb, to say nothing to the nutrient deficiencies from inadequate essential fats.

3. Phytates tightly bind to metal ions and make them unavailable for absorption. Analytical chemists actually use purified phytates in experiments where it is necessary to quantify the amounts of metal ions like calcium, zinc, or iron in a sample because the phytates bind to these metals tighter than just about any other molecule. The same thing happens when you eat phytates, and this is not a good thing for bone health or iron status.

4. Open door for autoimmunity and cancer. Once the gut lining is damaged, we are at exceptionally high risk of autoimmune disease, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and several types of cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The pancreas is assailed y grain-induced inflammation due to CCK problems and elevated insulin levels. This inflammation is a potential cause of pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).

Why does all this happen? Because grains are pissed that you want to eat them and they are willing, and able to fight back.

Here is a short list of the problems associated with leaky gut and the autoimmune response: infertility, Type 1 diabetes, Multiple sclerosis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, Vitiligo, Narcolepsy, Schizophrenia, Autism, Depression, Huntington’s, Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hypothyroidism, Porphyria. pg. 94

Keep your Insulin in check! Exert from the Paleo Solution.

I promise the full review will be up soon, little lexi came down with a cold and needed some extra love! But here is another exert (although you really should just go out and buy the whole book!):

“As if effects of elevated insulin on cholesterol were not bad enough we add insult to injury when blood pressure increases in response to elevated insulin levels. When blood insulin levels increase, we make more of a hormone called aldosterone. Aldosterone causes our kidneys to retain sodium. In biology cases there is a common saying “water follows salt.”If we retain sodium, we retain water. And when we retain water, the pressure increases in our arteries and veins, making it easier for them to become damaged. Turbulent flow irritates the vascular beds and causes them to thicken. This thickening, combined with arterial plaques, can narrow the vital arteries to our heart, brain, and other organs.” Pg 76
